The traditional art of glassblowing dates back to over 2000 years ago, and it remains a novel glass-forming technique that requires rigour, patience and expertise. Lehmann Glass strongly believes in protecting and preserving this tradition, which is upheld through their handmade (i.e., hand-blown; mouth-blown) glass collections.
By contrast, a manufacturing process is used to create machine-made glassware. This technique requires great mastery of cold cutting to create elegant and durable glassware that achieves the same finesse, brilliance and transparency of Lehmann’s handmade collections.
While handmade glassware tends to be the lightest in weight and thinnest in profile compared to machine-made glassware of the same size, a common thread throughout all Lehmann Glassware is their transparency, thinness and smooth finish.

General Glassware Enquiries
A centilitre (cL) is a volumetric measure that is equal to one hundredth of a litre: 10 mL. For example, a glass that is specified as 45 cL would mean that the glass has a maximum capacity of 450 mL should you fill the glass all the way to the top.
Master glassmakers, sommeliers, wine professionals, students, enthusiasts and scientists alike have long supported the notion that glassware really does matter in unlocking the full potential of wine. The wider population is also coming to this realisation, as novel research has recently shown that our perception of flavour has less to do with our taste buds and more to do with our ability to smell. The glasses we choose for wine tasting must therefore enable us to detect aromas distinctly and precisely for the ultimate tasting pleasure.

At Sally Hillman, we believe selecting glassware for your favourite drink should be fun and simple, which is why we admire Lehmann Glass for their accessibility and diversity. Rather than assigning a specific glass to a specific grape varietal, Lehmann Glass offers a navigable and demystified glassware range to suit a variety of wine styles. When it comes to red wine, we recommend three styles of glassware to cater to three different styles of red wine. For white, orange and rosé wines, we recommend two styles of glassware.
For champagne, we recommend two primary styles of glassware, with a suggested third style reserved for entertaining and hosting.
These different glassware styles are purposefully designed to reveal the distinctive aromas and characteristics of particular wine styles (e.g., wines with high alcohol content require more space for aeration to dissipate the harsh alcohol vapours so that the wine’s aromas can be identified, and champagnes require glassware that best preserves effervescence while allowing enough space for aromas to develop).

White wines, orange wines (skin-contact white wines) and rosé wines are generally served colder than red wines. This means that glassware for these styles of wine must be smaller than glassware for red wine as they are able to better maintain cool temperatures, preserving the wine’s crisp profile. Additionally, the stem of white wine glasses is typically longer than that of red wine glasses in order to prevent heat transfer from warm hands.

Champagne Glassware
Effervescence is everything when it comes to champagne and champagne glassware. When bubbles percolate at the bottom of a glass, they create currents in the champagne and fire tiny droplets into the air when they burst at the wine’s surface. This aerosol of aromas is then lifted towards our nose when we sniff from the glass and take a sip, dramatically enhancing our flavour perception and sensory experience. Therefore, the gold standard for champagne glassware is the rounded tulip glass, shaped to maintain effervescence and provide adequate development of, and access to, the wine’s aromas.
While it is true that the flute’s elongated shape maximises the effect of the bubbles and aromas because they funnel through a larger volume of wine before bursting at the surface, the cylindrical shape and restrictive, narrow opening of the glass do not provide adequate development of, or access to, the wine’s aroma.

The rounded, tulip-shaped glass was developed by Lehmann Glass and sommelier Philippe Jamesse in the early 2000s when they both saw a need for glassware to more fully express what champagne has to offer. The result is the now-iconic tulip glassware of the Lehmann P. Jamesse Signature Collection, which is precisely shaped to enhance the effervescence and aroma of champagne. The shape of the Lehmann P. Jamesse tulip glasses not only improves champagne tasting with the optimal release of its aromas but also improves the sight and sound of the bubbles, which are all integral to the magical champagne experience.
There are three key factors that make Lehmann P. Jamesse tulip glasses so special.
1. Their perfect shape:
Gérard Liger-Belair, a renowned physicist at the University of Reims who works extensively in the science of champagne, discovered that the spherical shape of Lehmann P. Jamesse glasses encourages the vertical movement of effervescence as bubbles carry aromas to the surface. These glasses allow each bubble to burst at the widest point of the ‘tulip’ to free its aromas, providing optimal space for aeration, which coaxes out the more nuanced notes, deftly captured by the tapered lip.
2. The precisely pointed base:
Gérard also discovered that microscopic fibres—deposited from the air or left after wiping with a kitchen towel—are the cause of bubble formation in the glass. These random, natural impurities provide nucleation sites for dissolved carbon dioxide molecules to gather and generate a chain of bubbles.
While some manufacturers force bubble formation by engraving the bottom of the glass to create an artificial nucleation site, the Ultralight handmade Lehmann P. Jamesse tulip glasses are able to successfully—and naturally—promote a controlled string of bubbles through the precise shaping of the base of the glass. A defining feature of the Ultralight Lehmann P. Jamesse glassware is their pointed base, perfectly pronounced to encourage a clear-cut and long-lasting effervescence while allowing the champagne freedom to produce a natural bead without any mechanical manipulation whatsoever.
3. Their clarity, thinness and smooth finish:
A common thread throughout all Lehmann glassware is their clarity, thinness and smooth finish—and the Lehmann P. Jamesse range is no exception. They each have the ability to engage and excite our senses, capturing the rhythmic sounds of the first pour, providing clean curves to caress, and allowing the light to refract to enhance and illuminate champagne’s signature sparkle and colourful gradients. A barely-there glass rim guides the wine’s seamless transition onto the palate, delivering both functionality and pleasure as it rests against the lip, ethereal and weightless.

Aged champagnes contain less carbon dioxide than younger champagnes, which means they have finer, slower and smaller bubbles. Smaller bubbles actually perform the worst in terms of aroma release; therefore, it is important to serve aged champagnes in wider, larger tulip-shaped glasses, taking care to pour gently to preserve the wine’s effervescence and aromas.
Glasses should be filled halfway to the hip so that aromas can gradually release at the widest part of the ‘tulip’. The large, curvaceous bowl can then enhance aeration to develop the lighter aromas, collecting them at the tapered rim for our tasting pleasure.

Compared to vintage, aged and complex champagnes (see previous question), non-vintage and younger champagnes will favour a tulip-shaped glass with a narrower body and smaller size. The relatively larger bubbles of these wines release more aromas, which means the mousse must always be maintained in these champagne styles. Smaller glasses with precise depth and curvature ensure that the effervescence is not lost rapidly and that bubbles rise steadily to the surface for aromas to concentrate optimally.

Red Wine Glassware
As these wines tend to have high alcohol content, we recommend ‘Bordeaux’ glasses. These glasses have a broad bowl and wide opening, along with a deeper bowl that presents considerable distance between the surface of the wine and our nose. This style of glassware allows the wine’s harsh alcohol vapours to dissipate more effectively, giving us an opportunity to identify the wine’s aromas more distinctly when we sniff from the glass. A wider opening will also allow for a smooth, even delivery to the palate, which further contributes to the sensation of body.

The ethereal aromas of these wines are best conveyed in glasses that allow as much aeration as possible to develop the lighter aromas. This means the glasses must have a relatively fuller and wider bowl than both the ‘Bordeaux’ and ‘standard’ red wine glasses described in the previous questions. Stemless Glassware & Tumblers
Not necessarily; it comes down to preference. However, we do believe that beverages that require colder serving temperatures (such as dessert wines, champagnes, white wines and some red wines) benefit from a stemmed glass because the tall stem allows the glass to be held further from the bowl, preventing heat transfer from warm hands. This is also why you’ll find that the stem of white wine and champagne glassware is often longer than that of red wine glasses, which are often served at room temperature.

Glassware Care
To ensure that your premium Lehmann glassware is in the perfect condition to allow you to fully enjoy your next drink, we recommend the following glassware care:
- Gently wash glasses by hand, without detergent, and rinse thoroughly under warm water so that they are residue- and stain-free
- Air-dry glassware upside down on a linen tea towel and gently polish them when mostly dry. If they are completely dry, a small amount of steam on the glass can provide friction to help with polishing
- When polishing, be careful not to twist the glass against the stem, as this can cause breakages.
When polishing, use Sally Hillman’s microfibre polishing cloth: a luxurious and specialised accessory boasting a generous size to buff and boost brilliance for that final touch of stemware sophistication. Lint-free, scratch-free, odour-free and easy to clean, Sally Hillman’s signature polishing cloth is complimentary with every Lehmann Glass order on a set of 6 glasses.
We recommend avoiding fabric softener to clean your polishing cloths because synthetic fragrances and residue may be left on the cloth, which can then transfer to the glass.
If you are not cleaning your glasses right away, put a bit of water in the glass so that stains do not become hard to clean later.
Yes, all Lehmann glasses are dishwasher safe.
- We recommend selecting a glass program and ensuring that the load is only glassware
- Use only minimal detergent to avoid leaving residue, as this can interfere with beading in champagne and can also taint the flavour.

We deliver Lehmann Glass Australia-wide, and we offer both standard shipping and express shipping. Additionally, all orders over AU$550 receive complimentary standard shipping to any location in Australia.

Yes, Click & Collect is available from Brighton, VIC, for glassware parcels only, excluding the observed public holidays and weekends. Simply select ‘click & collect’ at checkout, and we will be in touch promptly to arrange collection or, where possible, same-day or next-day service.
No, unfortunately, we cannot currently process multiple shipments in one order. Please create separate orders for each delivery address, however, if you prefer, you are more than welcome to complete our Bulk Order Form, which can be downloaded here. No, unattended delivery is not available for Lehmann Glass packages unless expressly authorised.
Melbourne Metro: We will liaise directly with you to ensure someone will be able to sign for your parcel on a suitable delivery date. Unattended delivery is only possible if you authorise it with us prior to delivery.
Regional VIC and Interstate: Australia Post requires a signature upon delivery. However, if no-one is home, the driver will leave a card for you to collect your parcel at your local Post Office. For all other couriers, a re-deliver card will be left for you to coordinate the most suitable time for collection with the courier. Unattended delivery is only possible if you authorise it with us prior to delivery.
If your parcel includes champagne, unattended delivery is not possible, as your parcel must be signed for by someone 18 years or older. Where applicable, re-deliver cards will be left for you by the courier.
No, we do not deliver to PO Boxes or RMB.

While we make every effort to ensure your glassware is packaged securely and clearly labelled ‘fragile’ so that it is treated with care, occasionally glassware may be broken in transit. If your glassware has been broken along the way, we ask that you take a photo of the delivery box and damaged glassware and email us straight away so that we can replace the broken item(s) as soon as possible.
