In 2018 Sally created a unique set of maps to illustrate the diversity of the Champagne appellation, collaborating closely with a cartographer to create la carte’-the cornerstone of the Sally Hillman Expérience. The aim of the maps is to demystify Champagne and make the appellation more understandable using a visual approach.
As you can see, Champagne is a not a single area of land, but rather a diverse and geographically scattered collection of growing regions, which is one of the reasons this fascinating wine has such complexity and character.
Each region has unique geographical features, micro-climates and soil types, known as terroir, and even when the same variety of grape is used, you will find the resulting champagnes differ greatly.
With each region distinctly colour-coded, the actual vineyards marked in a darker shade and smaller areas (“terroirs”) shown within each group, our cartography highlights the four main sub-regions within the official Champagne appellation.
